A fad diet is a diet that is prevalent but has no scientific information to back it up. These types of diets can be effective but are hard to commit to. Some of these diets can do more harm than good. It is better to follow a plan that is going to allow you to lose weight in a healthy way and has been discussed with your physician first. Here are five of the many fad diets out there.

Cabbage soup diet

The cabbage soup diet is a diet that is supposed to help you get rid of 7 to 10 pounds in a week. Individuals are supposed to eat a soup made of cabbage and other vegetables for a full week and only eat certain foods each day of the diet. You can eat as much soup as you want, but there are days where you can only consume the soup and vegetables, or bananas and skim milk. On days five and six you are allowed steak or chicken along with soup, vegetables, and tomatoes.

Some of the pros of this diet are you will lose weight, and you can eat as much as you want of the foods that you can on that day and the soup. The cons of the using this diet are you may feel lightheaded because you are not consuming a lot of calories, it causes gas, and it is hard to stick to. It is also easy to put back on the weight that you have lost because you tend to go back to your bad habits. This diet could be a great way to jumpstart your dieting, but should not be done for longer than 1 week.

Lemonade diet

The lemonade is made from 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of grade-B organic maple syrup, a pinch of cayenne pepper and 10 ounces of filtered water. You can only drink this liquid; you cannot eat any solid foods for up to 2 weeks. You will need to drink it at least six times a day. The pros of this diet are you will lose weight, but this is because your body is not consuming many calories so it is like you are starving yourself. The many cons of this diet are diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, and fatigue, as well as headaches. This diet should be avoided. Staying on this diet for a long time can rid the intestines of good bacteria that helps with immunity and digestion.


Seven day all you can eat diet

The seven-day diet claims that you can lose up to 20 pounds in 1 week. It is kind of like the cabbage soup diet in that you are restricted to certain foods that you can eat each day of the diet. On the first day, you are only allowed to eat fruits (except bananas). The second day you can eat all the vegetables you want. The third day allows you to eat only a combination of both of the previous days. On day four you can only eat five bananas and five glasses of milk. Days five through seven you are allowed to eat chicken or steak and an unlimited amount of vegetables. You should not do a lot of physical activity on the first four days of the diet because you are consuming a small amount of calories. This diet is restrictive and will not provide long-term weight loss.

Grapefruit diet

Grapefruit is good for weight loss because the enzymes it contains speeds up fat burning. This diet has been around since 1930 and was introduced by Dr. Kelly Brownell. The grapefruit diet claims to help you lose up to 10 pounds in 12 days. Before eating your meals, you would need to eat half a grapefruit or drink 8 ounces of grapefruit juice. There are a few foods that you have to stay away from, like starchy vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, jellies and jams, salad dressings, cereal, and pretzels.

You can eat three meals and have a snack before bedtime. The pros of this diet are there aren’t many foods you have to avoid and you are not starving yourself. The cons are people get tired of eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice. It is low in protein and vitamins that are needed. You could also experience an upset stomach or lightheadedness.

Apple cider vinegar diet

The apple cider vinegar diet does not really have a meal plan to follow. You simply take 2 or 3 teaspoons of vinegar before you eat. You can mix the vinegar with water to make it easier to consume. The vinegar is said to burn fat and prevents you from wanting to always eat. The diet does require that you work out and not overeat. The apple cider vinegar can cause damage to your tooth enamel, and irritate your stomach and throat because of the acid it contains. You may want to take capsules of apple cider vinegar instead.
These are just a few of the many fad diets that people are using. Most of these diets are designed to start your weight loss. They are not meant to be used for an extended period of time because they can be harmful. Your body is not getting what it needs and calories are few. You should always consult a doctor and determine together what type of diet will work best for you that allows you to lose a healthy amount of weight in a healthy amount of time.
