Foot odor is an unfortunate type of odor that many individuals suffer from. There are many different causes for foot odor, but the main culprit is sweat, as the foot is often surrounded by thick shoes, unlike other apparel. That being said, many athletes or those who exercise often find themselves dealing with foot odor on a regular basis. Luckily, there are many different ways you can prevent foot odor and rid yourself of the unpleasant smell.
Wearing proper shoes
If you suffer regularly from foot odor it is best to stay away from shoes that don’t “breathe.” Flip flops and other open-toed shoes are generally recommended. However, it is obviously a bad decision to wear flip flops during an exercise routine. During these times when wearing sneakers is a must, try finding specialty sneakers designed for air circulation so your feet are still able to breathe. You may also try aligning your shoes with baking soda and cloves to remove the smell.
Take care of your shoes
When you are finished with your workout take your shoes off as soon as possible. It is important to wash your shoes through the washing machine regularly, and the more often you do the better. You make sure they are completely dry before using. You can either lay them out to dry, or purchase a specialty dryer designed to completely rid shoes of moisture. Also remember to switch your shoes regularly so they have ample time to dry and be removed of all bacteria. Who knew a large shoe collection could actually be good for your health?
Buy the right socks
Socks are another important piece of the puzzle when it comes to preventing foot odor. Make sure you change your socks every day, if not multiple times throughout the day. Purchase cotton or wool socks rather than nylon, as nylon tends to capture moisture more easily. Colored socks are also prone to bacteria, so try to stay away from these socks as well. When it comes to washing your socks, turn them inside out so the washing machine can remove dead skin cells with ease.
Wash your feet
It may seem like the obvious answer to wash your feet. After all, when something smells, you wash it and it becomes fresh. This isn’t the case regarding some foot odor. If you really want to prevent foot odor, you need to completely exfoliate the foot using an exfoliating brush or washcloth. Make sure to cover all parts of the foot including the underside, heel, and in between toes. When you’re done washing both feet vigorously, dry both feet until they are completely moisture-free.
Try a powder
There are many different powders on the market that work great against foot odor. These powders are noticeable and are the same powders used in most over-the-counter foot sprays. You may simply put one of these powders around the entire foot and in between toes.
- Baking soda: Baking soda is a well-known product used to rid the environment of bacteria.
- Talcum powder: This particular powder is known to shrink body tissue, thus having the capability of drying out feet.
- Corn starch: Using this substance, sweat is easily absorbed and removed.
Soak your feet
A foot soak is not only relaxing after a long workout but can also prevent foot odor. Begin by putting a gallon of warm water into your foot bath, bath, or large bowl. Then add one of these following ingredients:
- Add 1 ounce of bleach to the warm water. If this dries out your skin, add a smidgen of baby oil to the mixture.
- Add 2 cups of kosher salt to the warm water and enjoy.
- Add 4 cups of vinegar to the water to make feet more acidic.
- Place a tea bag inside of the warm water. It will soak up moisture and dry out your feet. Just don’t drink the tea afterward.
There are many individuals who suffer from foot odor. This unpleasant smell is quite common in those who exercise regularly, as it is a side effect of sweat. However, with proper preventative care the onset of foot odor can be dismissed. Simply by wearing proper shoes, washing socks regularly, and giving your feet a good rub-down, you can considerably lower your chances of having foot odor.
